What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI.

It is designed to engage in conversational interactions with users.

ChatGPT understands text-based statements, and it can respond with human-sounding responses.

ChatGPT has lots of practical applications.

To use ChatGPT, you simply need to visit the OpenAI site, create a free account, and start typing statements and questions into a new conversation with the AI interface.

You can ask ChatGPT a question, like you would in Google. But instead of delivering a list of articles that might answer your question, ChatGPT scans its vast database of knowledge to answer the question in a conversational form.

For example, I just asked ChatGPT, “How many types of elephants are there?”

ChatGPT responded with:

“There are two recognized species of elephants:

  1. African elephants (Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis): African elephants are the largest land mammals and are found in sub-Saharan Africa. There are two subspecies: the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis).

  2. Asian elephants (Elephas maximus): Asian elephants are slightly smaller than their African counterparts and are primarily found in South and Southeast Asia. They are further divided into four subspecies: the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus), the Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), and the Borneo elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis).

Each species and subspecies of elephants have unique characteristics and inhabit different geographic regions. It’s important to note that all elephants are highly intelligent and social creatures, but they face numerous threats and are considered vulnerable or endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.”

ChatGPT can create spreadsheets, write lines of computer code, and it can even write haikus about its own goals for the future

Who Can Use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT 3.5 is currently free and open to the public. ChatGPT 4 offers new features and is offered for a monthly subscription fee.

Personally, I get by just fine using the free ChatGPT 3.5 version.

ChatGPT is helpful for people who are seeking information about science, history, technology, health, and more.

It can be used by students and researchers to clarify concepts, suggest resources, and suggest topics for further investigation

ChatGPT is helpful for writers and content creators. I use it to generate blog outlines, create meta descriptions of my posts, and to write Pinterest pins to promote my content.

Companies can even encoperate ChatGPT into their websites to act as a text-based customer service interface to answer common questions and concerns.

It’s a brave new world! You need to catch up and keep up!

What is ChatGPT Conversation sharing?

ChatGPT now enables users to generate unique URLs that can be shared with others. By clicking on the “Share” button located at the top right corner of the chat window, users can generate a link to the specific conversation. This link provides a read-only snapshot of the entire conversation, including both user inputs and model responses.

Important Considerations: While conversation sharing is a powerful tool, it’s essential to understand its limitations and use it responsibly. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Privacy: Exercise caution when sharing conversation links, as they may contain personal or sensitive information. Avoid sharing them publicly on social media platforms to mitigate potential privacy concerns.

  2. Intellectual Property: OpenAI retains ownership of the underlying AI model and the data used to train it. Users own the content they generate during interactions but grant OpenAI a license to utilize and store that content for model improvement.

  3. Context and Interpretation: Recipients of shared conversation links may lack the full context, leading to potential misinterpretation. Provide additional context when necessary and exercise editorial judgment.

Benefits of Conversation Sharing: Let’s explore the various benefits that conversation sharing can bring:

  1. Collaboration: Share conversation links with colleagues, friends, or experts to gather insights, opinions, or feedback on a particular topic.

  2. Reference: Save conversation links for future reference, allowing quick access to valuable information, ideas, or solutions discussed during the conversation.

  3. Documentation: Use shared links to document conversations, ensuring a record of important discussions for personal, professional, or legal purposes.

  4. Knowledge Sharing: Disseminate knowledge by sharing informative conversations with individuals, forums, or communities where the information can be valuable.

  5. Learning and Teaching: Use conversation links as learning resources or examples to showcase AI-generated interactions, aiding understanding and education.

The conversation sharing feature in ChatGPT introduces exciting opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and documentation. By responsibly utilizing this feature, users can leverage the power of AI-generated conversations to enhance their work, learning, and problem-solving processes. As always, it’s crucial to exercise caution and consider privacy, intellectual property, and context when sharing conversation links.

How Does Conversation Sharing Work (BY CHatGPT)

When I logged into ChatGPT this morning, I found a little pop-up alert announcing the new conversation link sharing feature.

Naturally, I immediately wanted to play with this shiny new toy and learn everything that I can about what conversation is, what its limitations are, and how it might benefit my work flow.

I decided to answer these questions by going right to the source.

I opened a new conversation with ChatGPT to ask the AI all about it’s new link sharing feature.

The following is a transcript of my conversation with ChatGPT.

Responses were generated by ChatGPT, the AI-language model developed by Open AI.

Me: Good morning ChatGPT!

ChatGPT: Good morning! I’m ChatGPT, a language model trained to help with a wide range of topics. How can I assist you today?

Me: I heard that you can now share links to conversations with ChatGPT. What does that entail?

ChatGPT: Yes, that’s correct! With the introduction of conversation history, you can now share links to specific conversations with me. When you have a conversation with me, you will see a “Share” button at the top right corner of the chat window. Clicking on it will generate a unique URL that you can copy and share with others.

When someone opens the shared link, they will be able to view the entire conversation exactly as it occurred, including both user inputs and model responses. This feature can be useful for sharing interesting or helpful conversations with others, or even for saving and referencing conversations for your own purposes.

It’s important to note that the shared conversations will be view-only, meaning the recipient won’t be able to interact or modify the conversation. They can only read the conversation as it took place during the original interaction.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Me: Can I share my ChatGPT conversation link publicly on social media?

ChatGPT: I apologize for the confusion, but as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the ability to share conversation links publicly on social media platforms is not supported. The conversation sharing feature is primarily designed for personal use, such as sharing specific conversations with friends, colleagues, or within closed communities.

Sharing conversation links publicly could potentially lead to privacy concerns or misuse of the feature. Therefore, it is advisable to exercise caution and avoid sharing conversation links publicly on social media platforms.

Please note that my information might be outdated, and there may have been updates or changes to the features since September 2021. To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend checking the official OpenAI documentation or website for any updates regarding sharing conversation links.

Me: Will my ChatGPT log in information be shared with others if I share the link to the conversation?

ChatGPT: No, sharing the link to a conversation does not expose your login information or any personal details to others. The conversation link is designed to provide read-only access to the conversation itself. It allows others to view the conversation history and the interactions between you and the AI, but it does not grant access to your account or any sensitive information.

The link only provides a snapshot of the conversation and does not include any login credentials or personal data associated with your account. So, you can share conversation links without worrying about your login information being compromised.

However, it’s always important to be cautious when sharing any links or information online and make sure to only share with trusted individuals or within appropriate contexts.

If you have any more concerns or questions, feel free to let me know!

Me: How much of my ChatGPT conversation will link recipients be able to read?

ChatGPT: Recipients who open the shared conversation link will be able to read the entire conversation from start to finish. They will have access to all the user inputs and model responses that occurred during the conversation. This includes both the messages you sent and the replies generated by the model.

The conversation is presented in chronological order, allowing recipients to follow the flow of the interaction as it unfolded. They will be able to see the context of each message and understand the conversation in its entirety.

It’s worth noting that the conversation link provides read-only access, meaning recipients cannot modify or interact with the conversation. They can only view the conversation as it occurred during the original interaction.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Me: If I share a link and then continue my ChatGPT conversation, will people with the link be able to see what I add on?

ChatGPT: No, if you share a conversation link and continue the conversation afterwards, the updates or additions you make will not be visible to the people who have access to the shared link.

The conversation link captures the state of the conversation at the time it was generated. Any subsequent modifications or additional messages that occur after sharing the link will not be reflected in the shared conversation. Those updates will only be visible to you or anyone who has access to your ongoing conversation.

Therefore, if you want others to see the most up-to-date version of the conversation, you would need to share a new link after you’ve made the updates or additions.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Me: Is it possible to have a multi-user conversation with ChatGPT?

ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I can engage in a conversation with multiple users, but the interaction takes place through a single interface. In a text-based setting like this, users can take turns sending messages and receiving responses.

However, it’s important to note that my responses are generated based on the most recent user input and do not have built-in mechanisms to track individual users separately. From my perspective, it appears as a single ongoing conversation without distinct user identities.

If multiple users are participating in the conversation, it’s essential to clearly indicate the intended recipient or address specific users within the text to avoid confusion. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that simultaneous interactions from multiple users may impact the coherence and continuity of the conversation.

If you have a specific use case in mind or need further assistance regarding multi-user conversations, please provide more details so I can offer more tailored guidance.

Me: What are the benefits of sharing the link to a ChatGPT conversation?

ChatGPT: Sharing the link to a conversation can have several benefits:

1. Collaboration: Sharing the conversation link allows you to collaborate and seek input from others. You can share the link with colleagues, friends, or experts in a particular field to gather their insights or opinions on the discussion.

2. Reference: The conversation link serves as a convenient way to save and reference a conversation for future use. If the conversation contains valuable information, ideas, or solutions, you can save the link and revisit it later for a quick recap or to extract relevant details.

3. Documentation: The shared link can be used for documentation purposes. If you need to keep a record of a conversation, whether it’s for personal, professional, or legal reasons, sharing the link enables you to store and retrieve the conversation history as needed.

4. Knowledge Sharing: If you have an informative or helpful conversation with me that you believe others could benefit from, sharing the link allows you to disseminate that knowledge more widely. You can share the link with individuals, forums, or communities where the information could be valuable.

5. Learning and Teaching: Teachers, educators, or students can use the conversation link to showcase examples or demonstrate how interactions with an AI language model unfold. It can be used as a learning resource or a tool to explain AI-generated responses.

Remember to use discretion when sharing conversation links, as they may contain sensitive or private information. It’s always important to consider the context and content of the conversation before deciding to share it.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Me: What are the risks of sharing the link to my ChatGPT conversation?

ChatGPT: While sharing the link to a conversation can be beneficial, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks involved. Here are some risks to consider:

1. Privacy: The conversation may contain personal, sensitive, or confidential information. Sharing the link indiscriminately could lead to unintended exposure of private details. Exercise caution and review the conversation content before sharing to ensure sensitive information is not included.

2. Misinterpretation: The context of a conversation is important for understanding the nuances and intent behind the interactions. When sharing a conversation, there’s a possibility that recipients may misinterpret or misunderstand the content without the full context. Ensure that recipients are aware of the limitations and potential biases associated with AI-generated responses.

3. Reuse and Misuse: Once a conversation link is shared, you lose control over how it is used or disseminated by others. There is a risk that the conversation could be reused or misused in ways that you did not intend or anticipate. Be cautious when sharing links and only do so with trusted individuals or within appropriate contexts.

4. Legal and Compliance Concerns: Depending on the nature of the conversation and the jurisdiction you’re in, there may be legal or compliance considerations to keep in mind. Ensure that sharing the conversation complies with relevant laws, regulations, and privacy policies.

5. Security: Sharing the link could potentially expose vulnerabilities in the system or enable malicious actors to exploit them. It’s important to trust the platform or service you’re using to ensure the security of the conversation data.

To mitigate these risks, it’s recommended to review the conversation content, redact any sensitive information if necessary, and only share the link with individuals or groups who have a legitimate need to access the conversation.

If you have any further concerns or questions, please let me know, and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Me: Who owns the IP rights to a ChatGPT conversation?

ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I don’t have ownership of the conversations or the intellectual property (IP) rights associated with them. OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, retains ownership of the underlying model and the data used to train it.

Regarding the conversations you have with me, OpenAI’s current policy, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, states that users own the content they generate during interactions. However, OpenAI is granted a license to use and store the content for the purpose of improving and further developing the AI model and related technologies.

It’s important to note that intellectual property laws can vary depending on the jurisdiction and specific circumstances. If you have concerns about the IP rights associated with the conversation, it’s recommended to review the terms of service or consult legal professionals familiar with intellectual property laws in your jurisdiction.

Please keep in mind that my responses are based on the information available up until September 2021, and there may have been updates or changes to OpenAI’s policies since then. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I suggest referring to OpenAI’s official documentation or contacting them directly.

ChatGPT: Publishing my responses to a blog or article is generally permissible, but there are important considerations to keep in mind:

1. OpenAI’s Usage Policies: OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has specific usage policies that outline acceptable and prohibited use cases. It is advisable to review their policies to ensure compliance before publishing content generated by the AI model.

2. Attribution: When publishing content generated by an AI model like ChatGPT, it’s important to provide appropriate attribution to OpenAI as the creator of the underlying technology. Clearly state that the responses are AI-generated and credit OpenAI accordingly.

3. Context and Responsibility: Ensure that the AI-generated content is presented in proper context and use it responsibly. It’s important to fact-check, verify, and interpret the responses to the best of your ability before publishing them. Avoid using the AI-generated content in a way that could mislead or deceive readers.

4. Legal and Ethical Considerations: Understand and comply with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines when publishing content. This includes copyright laws, privacy considerations, and avoiding any content that may infringe upon the rights of others.

5. Potential Limitations: While AI models like ChatGPT can provide helpful information, they also have limitations. Be aware that the responses may not always be accurate, up-to-date, or suitable for all contexts. Exercise editorial judgment and provide additional context or analysis as necessary.

Remember, my responses are based on training data up until September 2021, and there may have been updates or improvements since then. It’s always recommended to refer to OpenAI’s official documentation and stay informed about any changes in policies or best practices.

If you have further questions or need more specific guidance, please let me know!

Me: Can I create links for older ChatGPT conversations?

ChatGPT: I apologize for the confusion, but as of now, the conversation history feature in ChatGPT allows you to generate links only for the current active conversation. Links for older conversations or past interactions are not supported by the system.

The conversation link feature is designed to provide a way to share and refer to ongoing or recent conversations, but it does not extend to accessing or generating links for past conversations outside of the current session.

If you have a specific need to retrieve or reference older conversations, I recommend saving or documenting them externally, such as by copying the relevant parts of the conversation and storing them separately for future reference.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please let me know!

Me: How long will the ChatGPT conversation link stay live for?

ChatGPT: The link to a conversation remains live and accessible for a limited period of time. However, the exact duration for which the link remains active may vary depending on the specific implementation or platform you are using to interact with ChatGPT.

Typically, the link remains active for a reasonable period, allowing recipients to access and view the conversation. However, it’s important to note that the availability of the link is not indefinite.

To ensure that the conversation is accessible for an extended period, it is advisable to save or document the conversation separately if you anticipate needing to reference or retrieve it in the future.

Since the availability of conversation links may be subject to specific platform policies or implementation details, it’s recommended to consult the documentation or support resources of the platform you are using for more accurate and up-to-date information regarding the lifespan of shared conversation links.

If you have any further questions, please let me know!
